What should you wear to Homecoming 2016?

Le 10 octobre 2016, 10:03 dans Humeurs 0

The homecoming game is an exciting part of the fall semester here at UC Berkeley. Parents, alumni and fans from all over are here to cheer on our Bears, and nothing feels better.

For some of you freshmen, you may not know what to expect from homecoming in college. Well don’t fret, homecoming is pretty similar to high school. This is the most special football game of the year because we all get to dress up in fancy dresses and slick suits. Don’t worry about decking out in Cal gear this time, this game is all about showing your school spirit by looking like a million bucks (or maybe the price of your tuition).

If you’re not sure what’s trending in fancy-wear these days, don’t worry, we at the Clog have some helpful fashion tips to help you look fly for your Homecoming 2016.

1. Strapless dress

A strapless dress is always a go-to option for formal dress. Strapless dresses are very on trend with today’s fashion and are ensured to capture the attention of the cutie at the game. You want to look as glam as possible for homecoming, so pull out your favorite cocktail dress and hit the town.

2. Suit and tie

You could always opt for the more laid back long-sleeve button-up and slacks, but why not step it up and go for the full on suit for homecoming this year? Yeah, we know it may be a little hot under all those layers of clothes, but you’re sure to look spiffy.

3. Medium or short high heels

If you’re going to wear high-heeled shoes to homecoming, be sure you can walk in them. We’ve all seen people in shoes they can hardly walk in and it just looks ridiculous. So for homecoming, if you can strut in stilettos, power to you! But if you can’t, try to stick with shorter heels or opt for a wedge style.

4. An elegant up-do

Despite the fact that it’ll be warm this weekend, up-dos are a hairstyle that instantly make your outfit look more glamorous. So why not look great and feel great with a cute up-do this homecoming?

5. Small purse or clutch

If you’re wearing an outfit without pockets, you might want to opt for a small purse, clutch or fanny pack. You want something that’s big enough to hold your essentials but won’t weigh you down.

6. Handkerchief

Call us old fashioned, but you may want to use this if the night doesn’t go as planned for you, your date or your friends. There’s always at least one person that cries at homecoming.

7. Boutonniere and corsage

This one’s a must for this homecoming season. What better way to spice up an outfit than with a fresh flower? We’re sure many of you remember getting these for school dances in high school, and lucky for you, this trend doesn’t stop in college. So head over to the nearest florist and get your boutonnieres and corsages for homecoming this year.

We at the Clog hope you have a wonderful homecoming and don’t forget that the best accessory is a smile!

Church offering free homecoming dresses

Blanton came up with the idea eight years ago. She works at The RoseTree Boutique, and at the time saw an employee loading up dresses into bags to get rid of them. Blanton became curious if the dresses could be put to good use and contacted the Human Resource Office to see if there was a need, and there was. Blanton’s next step was to reach out to her church, the Vineyard Church of God, to ask if she could provide dresses through the ministry.

The church was immediately on board and both Carma Crum, the pastor’s wife, and Anita Marcum joined in. The RoseTree donated dresses, jewelry and shoes and now continues to do so. The church’s inventory started out with around 30 dresses and has continued to grow each year.

For the first few years, the group brought the dresses to Boyd County High School for girls to try on. However, the transporting became difficult and Blanton said many of the girls were embarrassed to look through the dresses during school.

Now, an entire room is dedicated to the dance wardrobe where racks fill up the space, and both shoes and jewelry are put on display resembling the look of a store.  Blanton said around 60 girls are helped every year with finding dresses for not only homecoming, but prom and other dance-related events.

“To some people it sounds silly but this is important to them and you don’t want them to miss out if they don’t have to,” said Blanton.

On Saturday, the girls will be able to receive alterations on their dresses and will be given a gift bag that includes personal items. Blanton said free dance tickets, flowers and hair appointments are also often provided to the girls.

Although the majority of the participants are from Boyd County High School, Blanton said girls have come from as far as Wayne County to pick out a dress. Over the past few years the church has also seen an increase in donations from those who just want to help with the cause.

Members of the church pitch in as well to help with anything needed. Crum said the church is working on a room designated to the dresses that will have dressing rooms and a storefront appearance.

Blanton said that girls who cannot make the event on Saturday can still come out to look for a dress. However, they should allow enough time for alterations between now and the day of their dance.

Your homecoming dress is very important

The Classic Short Dress

The classic short dress suits most shapes, but needs to show fabulous pins, so if your legs are not your best feature you should opt for a different style, but do not worry, we are here to show you which one. If you have fabulous legs, then the short homecoming dress will make you feel like the queen! The short dress can be fitted, this style suits petite or hour glass shapes, backless and full of embellishments, which would suit apples with great legs, as this would detract from your middle 'problem' area. The shorter style can be worn with skyscraper heels or ballet style pumps depending on your desired effect, but don't forget... you may want to dance so choose a style that you can both walk and dance in and always consider the height of your date as you may not want to tower over him!

The Ballerina Dress

The ballerina style dress is usually corseted on the bodice, can be highly embellished with sequins and beads and features a tutu style skirt. It is very feminine and can come in a variety of bold bright colours or neutral shades. This style also needs fabulous pins if you opt for a shorter style but can be worn longer, either ¾ lengths or full length for those who wish to only show a little leg. The ballerina homecoming dress can suit ALL body shapes as the corseted bodice is very flattering on apple shapes as well as petites and hourglass body types.

The Hi-Low Dress

This style of dress features many different varieties of bodice, it can be halter neck, sweetheart neckline or strappy, but always has a higher hem at the front than the back. This style of gown creates the illusion of height on even the smallest of statures so can be great for petites. The high low dress is the fashionista choice for homecoming, it has been seen on many a catwalk over this season and is featured in many homecoming, prom and bridal showcases. The high low dress also requires a good pair of legs though but doesn't need to be too short at the front of you are happy with your legs from your knees down.
